About This Place

Located in the heart of Harlem at 201 W 135th St, The Original Cake Man Raven is a standout cake shop that has earned its reputation as an essential destination for dessert lovers in New York City. This beloved establishment expertly combines the artistry of cake decorating with the rich tradition of soulful, flavorful baked goods, delighting customers with every bite.

The Original Cake Man Raven is particularly renowned for its signature Carrot Cake, creamy Coconut Cake, and stunning Cupcake Tower, each crafted to perfection with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The Carrot Cake, moist and warmly spiced, perfectly balances sweetness with a luscious cream cheese frosting that melts on your tongue. The Coconut Cake offers an irresistible tropical flair, its dense layers complemented by fluffy coconut shreds and light frosting. And the Cupcake Tower is a visual and culinary celebration, featuring a variety of flavors that showcase the shop’s commitment to taste and presentation.

One of the most captivating aspects of visiting this cake haven is the immersive experience offered to customers. As Orsella Hughes shares, watching the staff decorate each cake in real time is not just a treat but a fascinating glimpse into the craftsmanship behind every creation. This transparency and dedication add a unique connection—you feel the love baked into every slice.

Despite the absence of a sit-down dining area, the quality and flavor of the cakes more than compensate. Longtime fans like K Capizzo are willing to queue outside just to savor the acclaimed Red Velvet Cake, hailed as “the best Red Velvet Cake Ever.” This speaks volumes about the shop’s ability to consistently deliver unforgettable desserts that stand out in a city celebrated for its culinary enterprises.

Moreover, The Original Cake Man Raven holds a special place within the community as a proud black-owned business, cherished not only for its desserts but as a symbol of excellence and heritage in New York. Seymour Kitty enthusiastically recommends arriving early to grab some slices, emphasizing the high demand and devoted fan base.

The simplicity of The Original Cake Man Raven’s menu is a testament to the owner’s confidence and mastery. As Lara Nini notes, there’s no need for an overwhelming variety when the craft is so refined—each flavor speaks volumes through flawless execution and consistent quality. This focus allows the shop to maintain its status as the “GOAT of all red velvet flavored cakes” in NYC, a bold and well-earned accolade.

In essence, The Original Cake Man Raven is more than just a cake shop—it’s a vibrant culinary landmark where tradition, talent, and community converge. Whether you’re drawn by the hypnotic allure of watching cakes come to life or the unequivocal excellence of the classic Red Velvet, this establishment promises a profoundly satisfying experience for anyone seeking soulful sweets crafted with care and pride.

I am always happy with my desserts from the Cakeman! The staff is always pleasant and helpful. I especially love that you can watch them decorate the cakes while you are waiting for your order. This will always be my stomping ground for good desserts!

I want to keep this review short. Cakeman Raven is the GOAT of all red velvet flavored cakes in NYC. He is often compared to Doc’s Bakery in Brooklyn but his desserts are better and his repertoire speaks for himself and his talent. Let me say this, his menu lists all of the flavors available. It’s simple; he doesn’t need to overcompensate for his talent by making all of these different types of cakes. I had his cake before years ago and I’ve always tried to make it to his pop up shops but I never had the time. I went the Sunday prior to thanksgiving and I made it before closing. I ordered a Red Velvet slice and an Acapulco slice. His slices are $10 each and they are huge, so you get your money’s worth. Red Velvet : 10/10. Moist, succulent, not too sweet and the frosting is to die for. This is and has always been the best red velvet cake I’ve ever had. Acapulco : 10/10. I tend to get nervous with coconut flavored cakes but this one has a mix of citrus along with the coconut. It’s a nice representation that pays homage to CMR’s Trinidadian roots. This slice is delicious. I absolutely loved it and would repurchase this again. Go early to catch the flavors that you want. Cakeman Raven himself is very polite and professional. I asked for the Red Velvet slice because there were none left on the shelf and he said he would absolutely cut me a slice from a recently prepared cake that he just brought out. The other gentleman working the counter was very polite as well. He helped me out with the checkout process. Don’t walk, run. Also, he frequently has pop up shops in Brooklyn, so follow his IG page to catch him during those times he’s available outside of his bakery. I took a picture of his flyer that lists all of his contact info. I’ll be back
